The Best Potential Candidates for 2020

The 2020 election might seem far away, but 2019 is right around the corner, meaning Democrats will soon be weighing their options for who to pit against President Donald Trump. So, it’s important to take an early look at the Democratic nominee options to know who will have the best chance of winning.

One of the most popular choices for the election is Beto O’Rourke. While he lost the 2018 Texas Senate race to Ted Cruz, he’s been one of the most popular early picks for Democrats for a good reason. He may have lost the Senate race, but in a state that’s extremely red, it was much closer than Republicans would probably like to admit. This is most likely because O’Rourke’s platform is fairly similar to former president Barack Obama’s, allowing him to appeal to moderates pretty effectively. However, O’Rourke still seems on the fence about campaigning for 2020. But, even if he did run, there is another player that is much more likely to get the Democratic nomination spot.

Joe Biden has the name, the face, and the platform for an extremely appealing campaign. He knows how the White House works from his eight years as vice president to Obama and he’s certainly likeable enough to most Democrats and even some moderates to have a successful campaign. He’s also much more recognizable to swing voters than Beto O’Rourke. FOr these reasons, Biden is the safest pick for the Democrats. He has the appeal to beat Trump in 2020 and the support to stay in office for two terms. While he hasn’t confirmed a 2020 campaign yet, he’s certainly entertaining the idea. If the Democrats really want to win the next election, they should be looking at Biden.

Kamala Harris is another popular Democratic pick for the next election, however, and she shouldn’t be ignored. She’s been one of the Californian Senators since 2017 and has gained a lot of support for a potential run in 2020. This support has most prominently come from African-American and millennial voters. Her potential performance in the polls is also a bit more unpredictable than Biden’s and O’Rourke’s. Democrats will have to watch closely if she does decide to run because Harris might be able to draw in particular voting groups that other candidates lack the appeal to.

O’Rourke, Biden, and Harris aren’t the only potential candidates, but they are the most likely to have successful campaigns and should be at the top of the list when the Democrats decide who to nominate if they run in 2020. Other names that are also currently in talks for running are Bernie Sanders, Corey Booker, Hillary Clinton, and Stacey Abrams. However, if the Democrats want to win they should be looking at the candidates that can bring in moderates like Beto O’Rourke, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Democrats better hope they run, because they’re the best bet.
