Dear Mr. President,
Didn’t expect I’d have to say this again.
You don’t know me. I’m one of your constituents as a citizen of the United States. I’m the editor-in-chief of the online magazine and news source Metamedianews.com. And I speak for all of our writers. And I’d like to give you a message about your tweet pictured above.
The freedom of the press is so important to a free nation that it was included in the first amendment to the constitution you took an oath to protect and defend. In our first president’s tenure in the office, he was so adored by the people that they weren’t sure how to address him. “Your Exalted Excellency” was floated as one, and there were a number of others proposed, all including the title “excellency.” Finally one Senator pointed out that the constitution specifically forbids titles that are akin to royalty. We had just thrown the most powerful empire in the world at the time out of our fledgling country. Royalty was anathema to everything we had just rid ourselves of.
As much as you like to think of yourself as an elected king or emperor, you most certainly are not. You’re an employee. Of us. We are not “an enemy of the American people.” By “we” I mean all of the media and press. And we will never stop reporting on your activities. Trying to threaten or bully us won’t work.
Should you try to shut down any media, you’ll be in for the fight of your entire term as president. You have a lot more important things to place your focus on. We suggest you get to work. This pettiness is a distraction you can’t afford. I have no idea what happened to your self-confidence to make a man of your age so incredibly easy to provoke. It needs to stop. Our real enemies notice this and will use it against you.
We are the media, and none of us are going anywhere. I hope others pay attention and add their voices to ours by using your personal favorite promotion method: Twitter. You probably won’t read this, but someone in your staff will.
Let’s all hope someone can convey this message to you in the terms you understand.
